Lauryn Pinard

Lauryn Pinard is a London-based Franco-Haitian cross-discipline artist spanning photography, film, research and dance, whose practice engages with the body as archive.  She was Artist-in-Residence at Academy Mews Dance Studio in autumn 2022 and premiered her film series Moun Dlo as part of the Dancing with Decolonisation 2022 conference.

Roshini Kempadoo

Roshini Kempadoo is a photographer and visual artist, who is particularly interested in looking at photography within the archive.  Kempadoo’s work is research-based, concerned with women’s issues and representation and particularly the representation of Black people and the Caribbean.  She helped to set-up Autograph ABP, the first Black British photographic association and is also a Professor of Photography and Visual Culture at the University of Westminster.

Gaynor Legall is an advocate for ethnic minority women in the Welsh public sector and was the first Black female City Councillor in Wales.  Legall is also a board member of Diverse Excellence Cymru, an organisation which seeks to encourage diversity and equality using community support projects.  She has also been the Director of Butetown History and Arts Centre, the Chair of The Heritage and cultural Exchange and part of Cadw, the historic environment service for Welsh Government to safeguard historical places for future use.

Josie Woods

1912 – 2008

Credited as the first person to bring the jitterbug to the UK with her show, The Jitterbug Jamboree, Josie Woods was a dancer, choreographer, teacher and activist.  Woods was part of the Eight Black Streaks, the first established dance troupe of Black Britons that toured music halls.  After moving to work in television following the closure of music halls, Woods became a film extra, where upon her employment, she disputed the pay for Black actors and organised a strike.

Una Marson

1905 – 1965

Una Marson was a poet, playwright, editor, activist and broadcaster.  She was was regarded as the first Black British female feminist to speak out against racism and sexism in Britain.  Marson was the first Black woman to be employed by the BBC where she became the Producer of Calling the West Indies, which was a place for  soldiers fighting in World War Two to have their messages read to families.  As well as her radio broadcasting, Marson wrote for newspapers, published political writings from a Black feminist perspective and was an avid campaigner against the colour bar.

Amy Ashwood Garvey

1897 – 1969

Amy Ashwood Garvey was a Pan-Africanist, feminist and campaigner.  She was the co-founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association with Marcus Garvey, Director of Black Star Line Steamship Corporation and one of two female speakers at the 5th Pan-African Congress, Manchester in 1945.  Her activity in politics and the arts was not exclusive to Britain.  Garvey also toured the Caribbean and US leading lectures and talks.

Sharon Watson is the current CEO and Principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD).  She is also a dancer, choreographer and educator.  Watson was one of the first female principal dancers in the all-male dance company, Phoenix Dance Theatre, and is committed to improving diversity in the arts and supporting the voices of emerging women and Black artists.  Before her role as CEO and Artistic Director of NSCD, Watson worked as Director of Learning and Access at Northern Ballet Theatre and also Artistic Director at Phoenix Dance Theatre.

Elsie Owusu is an urban and interior designer, architect and special conservationist.  She has worked on recognisable projects, such as co-leading the UK Supreme Court refurbishment and being on the master planning team for Green Park tube station.  Owusu has also worked on international regeneration projects in Ghana and Nigeria.  Owusu was the founding member and first Chair of the Society of Black Architects and is the Director of JustGhana and ArchQuestra.

Sian Green-Lord

Sian Green-Lord is a model, motivational speaker and disability activist.  She founded the Sian Green Foundation to financially support people to get sports blade prosthetics and to provide mental-health support for amputees.  When she lost her leg after an accident involving a taxi cab in New York, Green-Lord became passionate about helping other people to get the prosthetics they need to remain an active life.

Winifred Atwell

1910 – 1983

World renowned pianist and music star, Winifred Atwell became the highest selling pianist of her time and the first Black artist to reach no.1 in the UK singles chart and she was the only female instrumentalist to do so.  Touring in Britain and Australia, Atwell became known for her boogie-woogie music style and held two gold and two silver discs for piano music in Britain.
