Urban Bush Women 1987, Leicester. How was that?!

It is time to start getting excited about Urban Bush Women coming to perform at this year’s Let’s Dance International Festival! Even better, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar is keynote speaker at the creme de la creme of the festival the Black Women In Dance: Stepping Out of the Barriers conference!

The company were last in Leicester in 1987 and one has to wonder what it was like!

Here is the original pamphlet for the event, kept by my manager Pawlet Brookes who did the marketing for their last performance here in Leicester, UK.

I asked Pawlet what she remembered of their last Leicester debut:

PB: It was fantastic, UBW performed at Scraptoft campus to a full house. They attracted an audience from town which had not happened before and this created a new energy.

People where scrambling around for tickets, students and lectures rocked up on the night but couldn’t get a tickets.

The night ended with a standing a standing ovation and for those that saw the performance a feeling that they had been part of something special.

Their performance of new work Walking With ‘Trane at Let’s Dance International Frontiers 2016 will no doubt create the same response of excitement. The dance community here in Leicester is strong, and many attendees are coming from London also!
